Learn about the practice of traditional tool-making in a demonstration and workshop led by proud Gringai/Worimi man and Cultural Knowledge Holder Luke Russell.

Luke has worked closely with Elders and Cultural Knowledge Holders to learn about engineering and material processes to revitalise traditional practices developed by the Worimi people. In this workshop, Luke invites audiences to watch, learn, and participate in making a range of tools including boomerangs, clubs, fishing hooks, and spears. Luke will share techncial knowledge and cultural stories, as participants learn skills in carving, rope-tying, and weaving using naturally sourced materials.

Luke Russell is a proud Gringai/Worimi man and Cultural Knowledge Holder. Luke's practice and research is focused on learning and passing on the knowledge of his Elders. This includes sharing his knowledge of the practice of Kuueeyung, traditional bark canoe-making, and tool making utilising sourced and natural materials. Luke is dedicated to re-awakening the true language, stories, artefacts and practices of the Worimi people, and those within the Kattung language group.
